Modi Calls for Sustainable Living as Assam Prepares for Sarma’s Second-Term Oath; Indian Nationals Safe After Hantavirus Scare in Spain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indians in Secunderabad to adopt sustainable living and reduce imports. Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath for a second term as Assam Chief Minister after the NDA’s landslide victory, while two Indian nationals aboard MV Hondius remain safe following a Hantavirus outbreak in Spain.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday issued a strong appeal for Indians to reduce dependence on imported goods and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, stressing that everyday patriotic choices can strengthen the nation’s economy, improve public health, and protect the environment.

Addressing a gathering in Secunderabad, the Prime Minister urged citizens to cut down on the use of edible oil and chemical fertilisers, saying such measures would help conserve valuable foreign exchange, encourage natural farming, and contribute to better health outcomes. He called for a nationwide shift toward eco-friendly agriculture and responsible consumption habits as critical components of India’s long-term economic resilience.

Reinforcing the idea that patriotism extends beyond military sacrifice, Modi said national service is a daily responsibility shared by every citizen. He underscored the importance of fuel conservation and urged people to embrace public transport, carpooling, rail travel, and electric vehicles. According to the Prime Minister, India’s future depends on balancing accelerated economic development with meaningful environmental conservation.

In another major political development, Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam on May 12, 2026, at 11:40 AM. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara.

The formation of the new state government will take place in accordance with Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India, which governs the appointment of Chief Ministers and state ministers. Sarma’s return to office follows a sweeping electoral mandate secured by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the National Democratic Alliance in the April 2026 Assembly elections, where the alliance won 102 of the 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly. The emphatic victory reaffirms the NDA’s continued dominance in the state’s political landscape.

According to the Embassy, the Indian Ambassador has remained in constant contact with Spanish authorities to monitor the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of the two crew members. The vessel arrived in Spain carrying approximately 150 people, including the two Indian citizens, and was anchored near the Canary Islands when the outbreak was reported.

All passengers were allowed to disembark in accordance with protocols established by the World Health Organization and Spanish health authorities. The Embassy confirmed that the two Indian nationals will be transported to the Netherlands, where they will undergo quarantine as part of mandatory health and safety procedures.

These developments underscore India’s simultaneous focus on sustainable nation-building, democratic continuity, and the protection of its citizens abroad. From Prime Minister Modi’s call for environmentally conscious patriotism to Assam’s decisive political transition and the swift diplomatic response in Spain, the events reflect the government’s broad commitment to economic resilience, constitutional governance, and global responsibility.
